About Us

Sequoia Deck & Fence, LLC began over twelve (12) years ago as Sequoia Deck & Fence Company. The business was later converted from a corporation to a Limited Liability Company, but our commitment to quality has remained unchanged. We know that consumers have a choice when it comes to their outdoor construction needs, and we know how important quality and security is when hiring a contractor. We urge all of our potential clients to do their homework before hiring a company for their job.

First, make sure the company is a legitimate entity registered with the Louisiana Secretary of State's Office. If constructing anything more than a fence on your property, also make sure the company is licensed as a home improvement contractor with the Louisiana State Licensing Board for Contractors, as required for building of decks, and most other home improvements within the State of Louisiana.

You can ask a Company for references, but, remember, they will only give you the names of people they are sure will provide you with the answers you want to hear. And besides, do you really want to take someone else's word on quality? Instead, ask the company for the job locations, and see their work for yourself.

Next, you should find out if the company is merely a contractor which will hire and send subcontractor(s) to your home to do the work, or a company whose employees will perform the installation. If employees are used, make sure that they are completely covered by Liability and Workers' Compensation insurance. (This will generally not be the case when subcontractors are used.) Will the vehicles arriving at your home during construction be easily identifiable as company vehicles or will subcontractor(s) be arriving in unmarked vehicles?

If you feel comfortable about the legitimacy of an entity, make sure to then ask about the quality of materials which will be used on your job. Will the fence boards be pine (which warps terribly) or cedar. If cedar is used, what grade of cedar is it? (Clear grade cedar will have no knots, #1 grade cedar will have some knotting, #2 will have more knotting with some holes, etc. A #1 grade Home Improvement store board is not equivalent to a #1 grade cedar board from a wholesale lumber distributor, so ask about the company's suppliers.) What types of nails will be used? What schedule pipe? If you are using composite materials for decking, is the company a certified installer? How many decks have they built? (We have built more than 1000 decks since the company was started.)

Sequoia Deck & Fence, LLC would be happy to answer any of your questions and provide you with any and all the credentials you need to feel comfortable with us as your construction specialist. We are an established company with a warehouse and retail yard located at 3526 Claiborne Avenue, Metairie, Louisiana 70001 [view map]. We are licensed and insured, we use only full-time employees covered under Liability and Workers' Compensation insurance, our employees use company trucks for hauling materials to the jobsite, all things we feel are important in establishing trust and security with our customers.

Again, when looking for a deck or fence installation company, do you homework. Ask the company for pictures of their work, and then follow through. Any company that is proud of their work, will place an identifying sign on completed jobs. Look at the picture to see if the sign is visible. If not, ask for the clients telephone number to call and confirm the work, or ask for the address of the job in the photo, and drive by to confirm that the job was actually performed by the company.

DO NOT TRUST PICTURES IN THE PHONE BOOK! If you see a picture in the phone book, ask the installer for the name of the client to again confirm the work. If he can't provide the information, the work may not be his own.

For example, Amko Fence Co. used a picture of a cedar fence built by Sequoia Deck & Fence in their BellSouth Yellow Pages® advertisement for several seasons. Perhaps they figured that the business they gained from the false advertising was more important than an honest reputation, or perhaps they just figured that the homeowners would never know the difference, until it was too late. Either way, it shows the type of deception you could face. We've put a stop to the Amko Fence ad, but you never know what other deceptive advertisements may be out there. DO YOUR HOMEWORK!
